Yves Palliès was born in the French
city of Nantes. Those closest to him say he entered the
world brandishing a paintbrush.
Son of a portrait painter and decorator, grandson of a guitarist
at the Paris Opera, Palliès' wife is originally from
the French town of Cholet.
Yves Palliès spends three years
studying art design at Nantes' Ecole des Beaux-Arts art
school. Beginning with ink drawings and going on to produce
highly figurative water colour paintings, he soon receives
awards at all of the regional art exhibitions.
However, this isn't enough for the artist, and it's in order
to progress to a higher artistic level that he successfully
turns his hand to oil painting, using a palette knife among
several other techniques. Finally, a visit to a "trompe-l'il"
exhibition displaying the works of "Jacques Poirier"
acts as a trigger mechanism - Palliès is immediately
fascinated.
Welcomed to the Parisian studio of his
great maestro, Poirier suggests that Palliès conscientiously
pursues this discipline and actively encourages him in his
works.
Myrtille Cadiou, the widow of another
trompe - l'oeil maestro, "Henri Cadiou", travels
to Nantes and also encourage Palliès by becoming
the patron of his first trompe-l'il exhibition which
is held at Nantes' Espace Culturel (Cultural Centre).
Thanks to his excellent work, his conscientiousness
and determination, Palliès enters a new stage in
his career. He is then invited to join the Reality Painters'
group founded by none other than Henri Cadiou, and participates
in the "Au Triomphe du Trompe-l'oeil" exhibition
(To the Triumph of Trompe-l'oeil painting) at the Grand
Palais in Paris.
He exhibits alongside prestigious artists such as : Poirier,
Gilou, Nadine Le Prince, Eléna et Mickaël
Gran, Solnon, etc, where he ranks among the youngest.
Palliès goes on to win award after
award : the Gold Medal in 1999 at the French Artists' Salon
(of which he is a member) being just one example. In addition,
he exhibits works at the Independent Salon, the Autumn Salon
and the Comparison Exhibition held at the Grand Palais in
Paris.
His ever-increasing notoriety soon surpasses the borders
of his native France - effectively after having been awarded
a first prize in Osaka (Japan 1994), Palliès is the
honorary guest at the Miami Arts Show (Florida, USA, March
1995) where he is awarded the "GRAND PRIX" and
for which he designs the exhibition poster.
Only numbering thirty or so artists throughout
the world, trompe-l'il painting not only requires
patience but also a definite talent.
Both of these qualities are decidedly
present in Yves Palliès permitting him to reveal
his timidity and conscientiousness through his works.
Works which leave us as the simple admirers we are and let
us dream a little !
And it is the eclecticism of the
subjects covered, the perfection of the drawing, the realism
of the artist, the humour present in the title of each painting
as well as the artist's slightly dissimulated signature
- to the extent that looking for it quickly becomes a source
of entertainment - which all combine to let the observer
dream.
A monograph entitled "L'Oeil-Trompé d'Yves Palliès"
(Yves Palliès : The Deceived Eye), written and created
alongside his wife and friends will be presented and placed
at your disposal in galleries.
